Be worthy of your degree by putting it to the right use, the director of the Centre for the Liberal Arts and Sciences, Jean-Paul De Lucca urged fresh graduates yesterday.
The graduation ceremony marked something more than a crowning at the end of a relatively short and successful journey, he said, as this year’s ceremonies kicked off at the University of Malta in Msida.
The ceremony celebrated the opening up of possibilities for graduates to prove their worth, and they could do this by being creative, thoughtfully engaged, and good at what they did.
“Creativity has become somewhat of a cliché tied to production, innovation and competition in economy-driven contexts… To create, however, means to grow. If you want to be creative, grow – always.”
Meanwhile, two of society’s challenges were thoughtlessness and disengagement.
“The effects of the inability to listen genuinely and articulate intelligently – in other words, the inability to dialogue – cannot be underestimated.
“Graduating should mean that you have reached a degree or level of ability to engage thoughtfully and intelligently,” he said.
Thirdly, whether they got a first or a third class would not matter much in a few years.
Rather, what would matter is how good you are at what you do, Dr De Lucca said, urging the graduates to put to full use the knowledge and skills they acquired in a professional way.
