The bright-light city of New York is perfect for an action-packed city break, romantic getaway or family fun.

Shopaholics will think they’ve died and gone to heaven in NYC as they wander around Macy’s and Bloomingdales

From the iconic Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty to the Coney Island Ferris wheels and the Yankee Stadium, you won’t want to fall asleep in NYC in case you miss something.

Shopaholics will think they’ve died and gone to heaven in NYC as they wander around Macy’s and Bloomingdales.

For something different, Greenwich Village is the place to head for specialty bookstores, record shops, antiques, crafts and gourmet food markets.

Elsewhere, funky clothes and jewellery can be found at bargain prices among the hip cafes at St Mark’s Place, the alternate name for 8th Street between Third Avenue and Avenue A in the East Village. Although many New Yorkers would argue this area has lost its soul to gentrification, it’s still well worth a visit.

Night owls can take their pick from the city’s vibrant nightlife, with highlights including live music at Carnegie Hall and clubbing in the Meatpacking District.

If you love London’s West End you’ll adore Broadway – the best place in the world to catch the latest musicals and shows.

The Statue of Liberty was the first glimpse many immigrants had of New York as they arrived to start new lives in the New World. Tourists like to recreate this experience by taking a ferry to Ellis Island, where many immigrants first stepped on American soil.

However, both Liberty Island and Ellis Island are currently closed due to damage sustained by Hurricane Sandy. Liberty Island will reopen on July 4, America’s Independence Day, while Ellis Island will remain closed for the foreseeable future.

Visit www.nps.gov/stli/ for updates. If you visit before July 4, compensate for Lady Liberty’s closure by climbing the similarly iconic Empire State Building – check out www.esbnyc.com.

No trip to New York would be complete without seeing Brooklyn Bridge. For a unique view, head to one of the many bars along the Hudson. The Beekman Beer Garden (www.beekmanbeergarden.com/) has a spectacular terrace.

And don’t miss one of the city’s newest attractions, the High Line (www.thehighline.org/). This converted 1930s railway line is bursting with food vendors, sculpture and green spaces and is the perfect place to gaze at Manhattan’s West Side.
