Bayern Munich remained in control of Champions League Group A and on course for the knock-out stages after a 1-1 draw against Napoli at the San Paolo last night.

The Germans remain two points clear of their Italian rivals at the top of the group and still have two home games out of three left.

Toni Kroos gave them a flying start after just two minutes but an own goal from Holger Badstuber pegged them back ending Manuel Neuer’s run at not conceding a goal to just over 19 hours.

Napoli will be less pleased with the result as Manchester City’s last-gasp win over Villarreal means they are just a single point behind the Italians now.

Bayern were by far the better side and their greater European experience was obvious throughout.

Napoli seemed a little overawed for much of the first half, their defence at sixes and sevens while they failed to push enough men forward.

Bayern capitalised inside two minutes as Jerome Boateng crossed from the right and Kroos ran into a gaping hole in the Napoli defence, controlled the ball and coolly slotted it past Morgan De Sanctis.

The hosts had produced nothing in attack with Neuer a virtual spectator in the Munich goal, but that all changed six minutes from the break.

Gokhan Inler played a lovely pass inside the full-back and Christian Maggio on the overlap skipped past captain Philipp Lahm and into the area, crossing into the six-yard box where Badstuber, sliding in to block, deflected the ball past Neuer.

Disaster seemed to strike for Napoli at the start of the second half as a shot from Gomez struck Paolo Cannavaro’s hand in the area and Portuguese referee Olegario Benquerenca pointed to the spot.

But De Sanctis plunged to his left and caught the big striker’s tame 49th-minute penalty.

At Eastlands, Sergio Aguero finally ignited Manchester City’s stuttering Champions League campaign with a dramatic late goal which secured a 2-1 win against Villarreal.

The Argentinian playmaker tapped home in the third minute of injury time just as Villarreal looked to have frustrated Roberto Mancini’s men at the Etihad Stadium.

Villarreal had stunned City by taking a fourth-minute lead through Cani but a Carlos Marchena own goal hauled them back into contention just before the break.

Wayne Rooney scored twice from the penalty spot as Manchester United notched their first win of this year’s Champions League with a 2-0 victory over Romanian minnows Otelul Galati.

Rooney coolly stroked home a 64th-minute penalty and a further spot-kick in injury time to give the English giants a vital three points in Group C after draws with FC Basel and Benfica in their opening two fixtures.

The result left United second in the standings with three matches still to play, trailing group leaders Benfica by two points.

But victory came at a cost for Sir Alex Ferguson and United, who saw fit-again captain Nemanja Vidic – making his first start for the club since the opening game of the season – given a straight red card.

Real Madrid powered to a convincing Champions League 4-0 win over Lyon after a dominant display at the Santiago Bernabeu.

Karim Benzema headed the opening goal in the 18th minute before Sami Khedira added the second just after the break.

An own goal by Lyon goalkeeper Hugo Lloris gave Real a commanding lead before Sergio Ramos hammered home the fourth nine minutes before the final whistle.

The result keeps Real firmly at the top of Group D with three wins from three, while Lyon, who had not conceded a goal in their European campaign before tonight, are now level on points with Ajax who beat Dinamo Zagreb 2-0.

Inter win

Inter made their European pedigree and experience count to clinch a much-needed victory at Lille, Giampaolo Pazzini leaving the French champions reeling with the only goal of the game.

Claudio Ranieri’s side travelled to France smarting from a league setback at Catania at the weekend, but they climbed to the top of Group B with a controlled performance.

As much as Lille tried to make the running in search of a first win, they found no way through a tight Inter defence and looked more vulnerable when Pazzini finished a piercing move with panache after 21 minutes.
