Bate Borisov produced a stunning performance to shock last year’s finalists Bayern Munich to maintain their perfect start to this season’s Champions League with a 2-0 win in Minsk yesterday.

Holders Chelsea, Barcelona and Manchester United cruised to comfortable victories but Italian champions Juventus had to dig deep before earning a 1-1 draw against Shakhtar Donetsk in Turin.

The result of the night was without doubt Bate Borisov’s victory over Bayern Munich as the Belarussians continued their surprise start to Group F with a second successive victory.

BATE, who beat Lille by the same score in their opener, scored with a 23rd minute strike from Aleksandr Pavlov and late goals by Vitali Rodionov and Renan Bressan to snap Bayern’s nine-game winning streak in all competitions.

Last season’s Champions League finalists had dominated the first half and hit the post through Toni Kroos but were left to scramble forward in the second period, fearful of the Belarussian side’s potent counter attacks.

The result leaves the group wide open with BATE top on six points and Bayern on three with Valencia who beat Lille 2-0 courtesy of two goals from Jonas.

Two goals from Spain midfielder Juan Mata inspired holders Chelsea to a 4-0 victory over little-known Danish side Nordsjaelland in Group E.

The Londoners went ahead in the 33rd minute when Fernando Torres robbed midfielder Enoch Adu and passed to Frank Lampard who deftly set up Mata to fire home with his left foot.

Joshua John twice went close for the home team, hitting the post on one occasion, but David Luiz made it 2-0 late in the second half with a curling free-kick.

Mata sidefooted the third goal in the 82nd minute before Ramires completed the scoring.

Bold Shakhtar Donetsk scored first and outplayed Juventus for long periods as they held the Italian titleholders to a 1-1 draw away from home in the Champions League.

Shakhtar’s quartet of Brazilians had the Italians, unbeaten in their last 45 Serie A matches, chasing shadows for much of the other Group E match where the goals came within three minutes of each other in the first half.

Alex Teixeira gave the Ukrainian champions a deserved lead in the 23rd minute when he fired the ball into the roof of the net after being cleverly set up by his fellow Brazilian Willian, the first European goal to be scored at the Juventus Stadium which was opened last year.

Defender Leondaro Bonucci levelled out of the blue in the 25th minute when the ball was laid back to him from a corner and he blasted an unstoppable first-time shot into the top corner.

Willian almost snatched a late winner for Shakhtar Donetsk but his fierce drive came off the bar in stoppage time much to the relief of the Italian champions.

Manchester United striker Robin van Persie continued his hot scoring streak as his double secured a 2-1 victory over CFR Cluj in Group H.

United had to come from behind after Pantelis Kapetanos fired the Romanian champions into a 14th minute lead.

Van Persie equalised 15 minutes later when he met Wayne Rooney’s free-kick and the ball looped off his shoulder and over keeper Mario Felgueiras.

There was nothing fortunate about his second goal four minutes after the break, the Dutch international showing a deft touch to flick another Rooney cross past Felgueiras.

United, who failed to get out of their group last season, are well-placed to advance this time with two wins from two.

Barcelona kept their perfect start to the season going with a 2-0 win at Benfica thanks to goals either side of half-time by Alexis Sanchez and Cesc Fabregas.

Sanchez was on hand to turn in Lionel Messi’s cross after just six minutes and despite a few scares from an attack-minded Benfica they sealed the three points 10 minutes into the second period when Messi again set up Fabregas to rifle in at Artur Moraes’ near post.

However, the Catalans’ night was soured towards the end when captain Carles Puyol carried off on a stretcher with what appeared to be a broken arm after he landed awkwardly when attacking a corner, before Sergio Busquets was shown a straight red card two minutes from time.
