The President of the European Commission, José Manuel Barroso, has expressed his condolences to Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi upon the death of Dom Mintoff.
“In his political life, especially amid the post-war challenges, Mr Mintoff endeavoured to bring forward the interests of his country and fellow citizens,” Mr Barroso said.
“On behalf of the European Commission and on my own behalf, I present to you and to the family of Mr Mintoff my most sincere condolences.”
Hannes Swoboda, chairman of the Group of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats in the European Parliament, sent a message of condolences to Opposition leader Joseph Muscat.
