Malta futsal champions Balzan will face Danish side Copenhagen and Alumnus Zagreb, of Croatia, in the preliminary round of the UEFA Futsal Cup after the draw was held yesterday at the UEFA headquarters in Nyon.

Last month, Balzan were crowned champions after beating Hibernians in a penalty shoot-out in the decisive clash the Corradino Pavilion.

Gabriel Dobre’s men have a tough task on their hands in Group F as they will meet Danish champions Copenhagen who will be looking to make up for their failure to progress from the preliminary round last year after placing second in their group.

The tournament will be hosted by Alumnus Zagreb who are one of 13 debutants and are fancied to advance in the competition.

Matches will be played between August 26 and 31.

The winners of Group F will qualify for the main round when they will meet ISK Dina Moscow, of Russia, Ukraine’s Lokomotiv Kharkiv and FC Deva, of Romania, in Group 3.

The top two in each main-round group, between September 30 and October 5, will go into the elite round where they will be joined by holders Barcelona, Kairat Almaty, of Kazakhstan, Araz Naxcivan, of Azerbaijan, and Portugal’s Sporting.
