Balzan moved into the second place of the FXDD Premier Division standings after seeing off San Ġwann 7-0 in their last match at the Corradino Sports Complex.

Despite the clear scoreline, it wasn’t an easy stroll for Gabriel Dobre’s boys with promoted San Ġwann offering a strong opposition until their resistance fell through late on.

This was the seventh consecutive success for Balzan who are now joint second in the standings with Luxol, three points behind leaders Hibernians who played a game more.

Balzan’s goals came from Emil Raducu (hat-trick), Zeljko Anicic (2) and a goal each for Christian Wismayer and Nicola del Re.

Before this match, Ħamrun Spartans returned to winning ways after beating Vittoriosa Stars 8-2 to join Żabbar St Patrick and Melita in a mid-table spot, all on the nine-point mark.

In the First Division, Naxxar Lions moved into the fourth place after seeing off Sta Luċija 5-0.

The Lions held most of the initiative with the Saints trying hard to react but they never found the opponents’ net. The goals for the winners came through Glenn Borg, Terence Dimech, Andrew Catania, Roderick Attard and Lydon Baldacchino.

In another match from the lower championship, Kalkara and Msida shared the spoils in a thrilling 4-4 draw that produced numerous scoring opportunities and fine goals.

Matthew Buttigieg (2), Vaughan Barnes and Duncan Bonello scored for Kalkara while Msida replied through Jonathan Brincat, Mark Pace, Alan Micallef and Aaron Calafato.

Fgura, meanwhile, registered their fourth success of the season to go fifth in the standings after a 6-2 win over Siġġiewi.

For Siġġiewi this was their sixth defeat of the season.
