Balzan overcame Vittoriosa Stars 9-2 in the FXDD KO final to retain the title they had already won last year.

As the scoreline clearly indicates, Balzan produced a commanding performance to impose themselves on court and land their second honour of the season following the Super Cup.

The Stars tried hard to bridge the gap with their more technically-gifted opponents, however, their sheer hard work and determination in the end were not enough to stop their more-quoted opponents.

Balzan opened the score after three minutes when Boycho Marev reached an Emil Raducu free-kick and blasted past keeper Gabriel Mansueto who had no chance to save.

The goal, however, sparked the Cottonera team into action as they levelled matters in their first real goal-scoring occasion.

Sean Vella took advantage of a defensive blunder in the Balzan rearguard to hit past the keeper and make it 1-1.
Balzan soon regained the upperhand and Marev hit home from a Raducu corner only for Vittoriosa to restore parity a second time through Vella.

Balzan, however, practically made sure of victory with three goals before half-time as Marev, Raducu and Carlos Scicluna were all on the mark for their team.

As the game resumed after the break, Glenn Bonello came to the fore for Balzan, scoring a quickfire hat-trick to dash the Stars’ hopes.

One minute from the end, Balzan added another goal when Giancarlo Sammut, well served by Rennie Tanti, hit home to the delight of the fans on the stands.

At the end of the match, Futsal Malta Association president Donald Spiteri presented the trophy to captain Scicluna as proud club president Mario Vella also joined the players for the celebrations.

In the First Division, Żebbuġ Rangers, Gżira United and Valletta continued with their march at the top places of the standings to seal promotion.

Żebbuġ had the better of Kalkara 10-3, buoyed by a superb display from the in-form Jamie Portelli who scored five goals.

Italian striker Alessio Restuccia was three times on the mark in Gżira’s 7-4 win over Naxxar Lions as Valletta emulated their promotion rivals and saw off lowly Sta Luċija 6-1 to maintain their unbeaten run in 2014.

Renald Formston scored a hat-trick for the Citizens with the other goals coming through Clayton Felice (2) and Dassier Borg.
