Balzan and Luxol lock horns at the Corradino Sports Pavilion this evening (kick-off: 20.30) in a match that gives the two teams an opportunity to claim the Super Cup ahead of the new Premier Division campaign that starts next week.

The final is normally contested between the league champions and the cup holders but with Balzan having made the double last season and Hibernians opting to quit the competition, Luxol earned the right to figure in today’s curtain-raiser after finishing third in 2013-14.

After a hectic pre-season, during which they played in the UEFA Futsal Cup, Balzan will be looking to retain the Super Cup.

The champions have lost a host of players from last season including Romanian trio Gabriel Dobre, Emil Raducu and Andrea Dan as well as Zeljko Anicic, Christian Wismayer, Reuben Grech and Jovica Milijic.

However, new player/coach Boycho Marev can bank on several new signings, the likes of Croatian international Frane Despotovic, Italian Marco Conti, promising youngster Matthew Attard, Mark Zammit, Eslam Khalifa and Karl Azzopardi.

It is still early to make an assessment of a team’s strength but judging from their latest acquisitions, Luxol are expected to rank among the contenders for the 2014-15 honours.

They have secured the services of Celino Alves, Peter Pullicino, Omar Toutoungi, Ben Camilleri and keeper Reuben Grech.

Florin Anton remains player/coach and the club retained most of the players who helped them do so well in the league last season.
