The Government’s decision to appoint John Cassar White as chairman of Bank of Valletta was made official by the bank yesterday, five days after the news was leaked to the media.

Mr Cassar White will be succeeding Frederick Mifsud Bonnici after the Government accepted his offer of resignation, while Taddeo Scerri will be replacing Gordon Cordina as director.

Mr Cassar White, a former Malta Shipyards chairman and a respected financial analyst, was appointed BOV chairman on Wednesday but the bank yesterday said the Government had notified it of the appointment on Friday.

Mr Cassar White retired from Bank of Valletta in May 2008 after a professional career with the bank spanning more than 36 years.

His latest position within the bank was of chief officer risk management. He previously occupied senior executive positions within BOV in information technology, administration, finance and credit.

He also served as director of a number of State-owned as well as private investment companies.

Mr Scerri is one of the founding partners of RSM Malta, an audit, tax and business advisory firm, and is currently the managing partner.

He was previously the deputy managing partner of one of the big four firms and, prior to that, he was managing partner of the Arthur Andersen representative office in Malta.

Mr Scerri has extensive experience in audit and advisory services to companies operating in diverse industry sectors including manufacturing, hospitality, public sector, retail and others.
