Esther Azzopardi will become the first Maltese match official on duty at the new Wembley Stadium to-morrow following her appointment as fourth official for the clash between England and Germany.

Following her successful return to international football recently, Azzopardi, a FIFA referee, was invited by the English FA to be part of the officiating team for the prestigious friendly match which kicks off at 3.30pm.

The other members of the refereeing team are from Switzerland.

Esther Staubli is the referee and Belinda Brem and Susanne Kung, assistant refs.

The match is a major occasion for the English FA as it will be the first time for the women’s national team to play at Wembley since their first international match in 1972.

England are currently 11th in the FIFA women’s rankings while Germany are second in the world.

The Germans are among the most successful national teams in the history of women’s football, having been crowned world champions twice in 2003 and 2007.

They have also won eight of the 11 Euro Championships, claiming the last six titles in a row.
