Major infrastructural works will be carried out on the roof of Gozo’s Aurora Opera House through funds from the Eco Gozo scheme launched by the Ministry of Gozo.

The roof is made of asbestos cement sheets and will be replaced with pre-painted galvanised insulated corrugated sheets. The project, run by Leone Philharmonic Society of Victoria, conforms with the Eco Gozo strategy, one of the aims of which is to eliminate asbestos from Gozo.

The process will temporarily expose the 1,600 seat opera house, which contains priceless designs and decor by artist Emvin Cremona.

The project is expected to start immediately after the Santa Marija festivities in August and will be completed within a month, in time for the opening night of the 2011-2012 theatre season.
