Żurrieq 0
Melita 1

Melita did the double over Żurrieq thanks to a goal scored by youngster Antoine Attard on the half-hour mark.

With this win, Melita moved up to third place in the table while Żurrieq remain in the bottom half.

The game was balanced and a draw would have been a fairer result, considering the bold effort put in by Żurrieq during the game.

Żurrieq goalkeeper Jeremy Alden was called into action in the early stages as he palmed Jose Cueto Rodriguez’s shot away for a corner.

The southerners responded with a fast move which ended with Osi Lucky Agbeobina hitting a low shot that was tamed by Philip Schranz.

After a promising start, the game became somewhat scrappy. On 25 minutes, Joseph Jojo Ogunnupe’s effort sailed high.

It was a good moment for Żurrieq who came close minutes later but efforts by Agbeobina and Matthew Schembri just missed the target.

Melita scored what proved to be the winner on the half hour when Attard controlled well just inside the area to fire home after being teed up by Luke Micallef who had made a brilliant run on the right.

Żurrieq’s morale was at a low ebb after falling behind and, four minutes before half-time, Kurt Coleiro’s effort for Melita was off target.

At the other end, Żurrieq staged a reaction but Agbeobina was foiled by Schranz who pulled off a fine save. Moments later, Agbeobina’s rising strike was blocked by Matthew Borg.

The second half was quieter with Żurrieq missing a good chance on 62 minutes when Agbeobina failed to make contact in front of goal.

Eight minutes from time, the Nigerian missed a sitter, heading incredibly wide with only the goalkeeper to beat.
