Athleta A-Z Electronics added the BOV KO to the Super Cup and MBA Shield after beating Siġġiewi Derby comfortably in Sunday’s final

A committed Athleta team showed the better ideas and the better teamwork as they cruised past their opponents to retain the BOV Cup.

Despite being at full strength, Siġġiewi never got going and most of their players produced below-par performances as their tactic to shoot at first sight of the basket failed to reap dividends.

No team can hope to win such contests without an effective defensive cover as Siġġiewi struggled to cope with Athleta’s fast breaks.

After a balanced start, Athleta began to pull away gradually, notching 12 consecutive points to end the first quarter 19-8 ahead.

They kept the momentum going as the second quarter got underway to extend their lead to 29-10. Substitutions helped Siġġiewi to recover as they closed the gap to seven points, 33-26, only for an Omar Said three-pointer to put Athleta back in charge, 36-26.

Until the fifth minute of the third quarter, Siġġiewi were still in contention, 43-36, but Marco Matijevic then committed his fourth foul while hesitant play by his team-mates did not help matters. Athleta profited with 12 consecutive points to start the last 10 minutes 55-38 in front and with one hand on the cup.

Siġġiewi threw in the towel, allowing Athleta to administer their lead and add more points to their tally for a comfortable win.
