Malta champions Matthew Asciak and Elaine Genovese were the dominant figures of the Marsa Open, sponsored by Emirates under the auspices of the Malta Tennis Federa-tion and played recently at the Marsa Sports Club.

In the men’s singles, there were 24 entries including some foreign players making the competition more interesting.

Asciak went on to retain his title beating Crbcedic, Marcus Delicata, Mark Gatt in the semi-final (6-0 6-2) and Bradley Callus 6-0 6-2 in the final.

In the semi-final, Callus was too strong for Denzil Agius to reach his first final.

The women’s event was con-tested between six players.

Genovese, once again, emerged winner beating Brenda Galea in the final 6-0 6-0.

In the semi-finals, Genovese beat Katrina Sammut 6-2 6-0 and Galea eliminated Maria Georgia Farrugia Sacco 6-2 6-0.

The men’s doubles event was won by Asciak/Gatt.

In the final, they were too strong for Agius and Callus who lost 6-2 6-2.

The presentation of trophies was made by Paul Fleri Soler, on behalf of Emirates, and the Marsa Sports Club Tennis Section chairman Mario Cutajar.
