Maltese artist George Fenech died at Mater Dei Hospital early yesterday aged 85, his family said.

Mr Fenech was best known for his paintings of Maltese landscapes, especially of the cliffs and valleys of his hometown Mellieħa.

He studied art at the School of Arts, at the Regia Accademia di Belle Arti in Rome and at the Scuola Arti Ornamentali San Giacomo, also in Rome.

In a career spanning 50 years, he put up several exhibitions in Malta and abroad, and taught art at St Joseph Technical Secondary School before becoming assistant headmaster for a time.

Last year, he was awarded the National Order of Merit by President George Abela.

Mr Fenech leaves behind his wife Doris and his two sons Conrad and Gilbert.

The funeral will be held on Tuesday August 23 at Mellieħa parish church.
