The famous electoral slogan of the Malta Labour Party, ‘Malta for all’, is now being laid to rest with the latest appointment (in a long series of political appointments) of Jeffrey Curmi as commander of the Armed Forces of Malta.

Now that the Police Force and the armed forces have fulfilled Joseph Muscat’s dream, namely that both be headed by staunch Labour supporters, the Prime Minister can rest assured of their allegiance to him, to the party and to their followers.

Thus, Muscat’s ambition of creating two strong political fortresses in the country has now been accomplished.

This is no surprise. What else could we expect from the arrogance of power in the hands of Labour? We all remember the rude manner in which past Labour governments behaved.

We still all remember that during Dom Mintoff’s reign, Police Commissioner John Cachia and his chosen men were assigned to the armed forces where transfers, political promotions and confusion were the order of the day and all this to the detriment of serious officers and other ranks who were serving at the time.

There was a time when politics did not feature in the distribution of promotions until Mintoff decided to involve himself in the armed forces.

The abuses that occurred then were purely and simply infringements of human rights.

The inability of the Maltese courts to look into these discriminatory tactics continue to be a major shortcoming.

An overhaul of the judicial system is of paramount importance.
