Cycling great Lance Armstrong returned to sporting competition on Sunday, finishing second in the Panama 70.3 half ironman.

The 40-year-old American, now retired from professional cycling, competed in amateur and professional triathlons as a teenager, before focusing solely on cycling. Making a return to the sport, he finished second following a 1.9km swim, 90km cycle and 21km run in Panama City.

Armstrong, who clocked 3:50.55, led going into the final leg of the event, before being overtaken by New Zealander Bevan Docherty (3:50.13), a gold medal winner in triathlon at the 2004 Athens Olympics.
