I refer to the article ‘Councils clash over name of replica arch’ (The Sunday Times of Malta, September 22). May I point out that the arch was not damaged by an RAF crane. It was originally broken down, according to historians, during the Second World War when a large military truck carrying drunken soldiers was taking them back to barracks and passed through the arch at a high speed.

Being a large truck it pulled down the arch onto the soldiers and some were injured. The debris was later removed by the army and was not kept for rebuilding.
