A section of the historic aqueduct in Mrieħel was extensively damaged when a car crashed into it and overturned on Wednesday early morning.

The police said the car was being driven by a 27-year-old man from Msida, who was accompanied by a male passenger, aged 17, from Swieqi.

No one was injured in the incident.

The incident happened shortly after 5am. Antoine Attard, a member of the Fleur-de-Lys Administrative Committee, said that another car hit one of the arches in front of Fino showroom, probably on Wednesday night.

This is the fifth incident in which the aqueduct was damaged in the last few years through traffic accidents.

The damage was reported to the Restoration Unit and the planning authority. Director of the unit Norbert Gatt said the cost would be covered by the driver’s insurance.
