Many of the letters I have recently read about the Maltese who were interned and later deported during the war for their pro-Italian sympathies reveal that some people are uneasy about even discussing this episode of World War II. In some instances, one can detect a case of selective morality.

The internees were 100 per cent Maltese. During the war, the United States government interned thousands of Americans of Japanese ancestry but later apologised to them. I believe an apology to the descendants of the Maltese wartime internees would be in order.
