How I wish I can agree with Mario Camilleri (July 22) when he wrote that pavements are for people. However, experience is showing this is not the case and no one is doing anything about it.

New buildings with underground garages or garage spaces that most of the time are below street level are cropping up everywhere. To accommodate garage owners, pavements are lowered to the detriment of pedestrians and those who suffer some kind of disability are even worse off.

Experts from various government departments confirm, even during certain radio programmes, that this way of building pavements is illegal. Local councils admit the practice is harmful but this illegality continues without anyone batting an eyelid.

I hate to say it because I love my country but there are many instances where Malta can be compared to or described as a banana republic.
