Another weekend full of cricket at Marsa commenced on Friday evening with a 20-over game against returning touring team Stockport Grammar School, here on their 11th visit.

Marsa batted first and produced a moderate score of 109 runs.

Andy Lenard was the main contributor with 53 runs, his score including seven 4s. Andy Naudi chipped in with 30 runs as Procter was the main wicket-taker for Stockport with two.

Wright opened the batting and remained unbeaten with 55 runs in the visitors’ run chase.

He had four other batsmen for help but none could resist Marsa’s bowling as wickets fell at the wrong time for Stockport who ended up with 103 runs to lose the game.

Tony Slater and Joy Ghoseroy felled two wickets each, both aided by the wicket-keeping of Sam Aquilina who registered three stumpings.

On Saturday, another returning team, Leyland, provided oppo-sition for Marsa who batted first and were rolled over for 59 runs.

John Grima was the only batsman to make it into double figures and remained unbeaten on 27 runs.

For Leyland, Watkinson was the main wicket-taker with four.

Arora’s reply

Of note was Lewis’s great throw from the square leg boundary which had Bikram Arora run out with a direct hit.

Arora set out to get his own back and took the only three wickets which Leyland lost. However, Lewis, this time with his batting, guided his team to victory with 19 runs.

The second game against Stock-port Grammar School was played on Sunday.

The visitors batted first and were dismissed for 95 runs with fine bowling from Slater. He took three wickets and Arora took two.

In reply, Marsa were soon in trouble after losing four wickets for 35 runs before Arora and Naudi steadied the ship for the hosts.

Gaskin then took the vital wicket of Arora (24) and Marshall felled three more wickets which brought the last batsman in and the score at 93. Naudi scored two runs to bring the game to a tie but he could not get the single off the last ball of the over.

Slater then had to face the opening bowler. Cool as ever, he got an inside edge to backward square leg for him to scamper through the winning runs.

Marsa won the series against Stockport 2-0.

The locals play their second game against Leyland today.

The men’s Summer League commences on Saturday and on Sunday the women’s Summer League comes to a close.
