Very regrettably, Joseph Muscat has gone and pulled another Alfred Sant stunt (not gimmick) on the long-suffering Maltese people by pledging to resign if the PL’s energy plan failed. And what worries many people is the casual manner with which he made the pledge, in response to a comment by water engineer Marco Cremona.

Does Dr Muscat or anyone else really think that Lawrence Gonzi would resign if his pledge to reform the primary health care system fell through? Highly unlikely! I can remember only one former Nationalist minister who did the honourable thing and resigned following very serious allegations of drug dealing inside his ministry.

Why does it always have to be Labour to set the example to people who are anything but ready to take that example? They will never change.

Another thing. While appreciating Dr Muscat’s desire to unite the Maltese people behind the Labour movement, I fail to appreciate the total absence of any PL flags and other emblems at activities organised so far in the election campaign, or the absence of any mention of Partit Laburista on the billboards proclaiming that Malta belongs to us all.

Most Maltese are hoping Labour would lead the country for the next five years. No matter what the PN says, Labour can do mounds of good for the country, even if its energy plan has to be fine-tuned. The more explicit promises Labour makes, the more the PN will find to criticise.

Floating voters are exactly that: they will decide only at the eleventh hour which party to vote for, no matter what amount of PL paraphernalia they see during the campaign.

So whose hands are we playing into? The PN has its name and slogan highly visible on all its billboards.
