An open day will be held at the San Franġisk Animal Welfare centre at Ta’ Qali today to raise awareness about animal care.

Starting at 9.30 a.m., the open day organised by the Rural Affairs Ministry, will feature several educational sessions, ranging from nutrition to neutering. A monument will also be inaugurated this morning dedicated to Star, the dog who died from several pellet wounds after being shot in the head.

The incident had sparked nationwide anger about cruelty to animals in Malta. A 44-year-old farmer, Alfred Vella, of Birżebbuġa, was jailed for three months and fined €10,000 after being found guilty of animal cruelty.

The animal welfare centre has treated several injured animals in the year since it was inaugurated.
