On driving to a meeting from Sliema to Msida at 7.30am a number of cars no longer bothered to wait in what was a slow-moving queue and in the space of a minute I counted 25 cars driving along the bus lane at The Strand, excluding mini buses and taxis. This is not the first time I have witnessed such behaviour.

This is nothing short of road anarchy, contempt for the law and for car drivers who observe the law. Why are there no policemen or wardens in this area each morning? Why are there no cameras as in the UK and other European countries? Many drivers in Malta ignore the law as enforcement is poor. The government recently announced that fines for those caught using their mobile phones while driving are to be increased.

Do you think it has made the slightest bit of difference to people’s behaviour? We have all experienced drivers who seem to think that driving is a free for all and rules are there to be broken and not observed.

We need the authorities to take motoring behaviour seriously and to enforce the law. Only then will motorists change their driving habits.
