I do not agree that Austin Gatt should resign just because Arriva still have not got their act together. This would serve no purpose.

I would perhaps expect, however, that he listens to public opinion and pushes Arriva relentlessly, in order that Arriva changes some of its routes, as they are creating havoc all over the island, especially in St Julians and Sliema.

Commuters are constantly complaining that the time spent to get from one destination to the other is a frustrating experience as the journey time has been increased quite considerably, and the congestion caused by these buses has not helped either.

The very fact that buses from other towns and villages (Għargħur, Mellieħa, Rabat) are passing through Sliema and St Julians is hard to understand. Traffic in these two towns has increased in leaps and bounds. One can very often see three or four buses, one after the other, blocking the road (what timetable do they actually follow?) as more often than not, two of them are bendy buses trying to fit into one bus stop, which is impossible, as our bus stops can barely cater for even one normal bus.

What we are now experiencing are bendy buses not finding adequate space to park the entire length of the vehicle in a bus stop, consequently the entire rear coach is sticking out into the middle of the road (in all probability with another bus right behind) blocking all traffic. A case in point being the bedlam in front of Wembley’s garage, St Julians and Peppi’s Kiosk on the seafront.

I would suggest that these bendy buses are not used at all, and are taken off the roads as they cannot cater for their size and bulk, have compounded the traffic problems that presently exist and are only helping to make the situation worse.

Prior to getting the bendy buses to Malta, a thorough study should have been made of the type of bus stops that exist on the island.
