In the wake of the much-debated decision to honour the talented Gaia (pictured, right), who won the Junior Eurovision Song Contest, with one of the country’s most prestigious awards, it is time perhaps to consider an alternative.
By introducing a special and separate category for youngsters who excel in their field (be it education, the arts or sport), are successful in international competitions and show remarkable bravery or dedication to a cause, we would be giving recognition not only to Gaia but also encouraging other deserving youths in the future.
At the same time, we would ensure that we do not detract from the significance originally intended for Gieħ ir-Repubblika award.
I say this with the benefit of my experience as a former member of the award nominations committee.
