Works to re-open the Amputees Rehabilitation Unit, which burnt down on Friday, will be given priority, Health Parliamentary Secretary Chris Fearne said yesterday.

Meanwhile, the service will be offered from a section within Karen Grech rehabilitation day hospital, he said during a visit to the Amputee Rehabilitation Unit located within St Luke’s Hospital.

He said an assessment report was currently being drawn up to assess the extent of the damage caused at the unit.

On Friday night, a fire broke out at the unit and the blaze caused extensive damage.

The unit was set up about a year and a half ago following the insistence of support group Amputees for Amputees that lobbied for adequate rehabilitation services.

Amputee Noel Aquilina, Oliver Scicluna who chairs the National Commission Persons with Disability, and Amy Camilleri Zahra from the support group Amputees for Amputees, had called for the imminent reopening of the unit.
