A man suspected of having murdered three men managed to rack up enough cash to pay his bail deposit.

Jason Galea had been accused of murdering his brother-in-law, Mario Camilleri known as L-Imnieħru, and his 21-year-old son Mario Jnr in August 2013. He is also charged with the murder of taxi driver Matthew Zahra back in August 2012.

The Camilleris were found buried in a shallow grave in a field in Qajjenza, when police were investigating a report about their disappearance.

Mr Zahra’s remains were stumbled upon during this search.

In July, Mr Galea had been granted bail when Magistrate Tonio Micallef Trigona imposed a deposit of €30,000 over the double murder and, a few days later, Magistrate Josette Demicoli granted Mr Galea bail against a deposit of €30,000 over the murder case of Mr Zahra.

The defence appealed the bail decrees, arguing they were too steep. But the Appeals Court rejected this plea and also rejected the Attorney General’s request to revoke bail.

Despite being granted bail, Mr Galea remained in jail as he was not able to pay the deposit. However, sources close to the law courts said Mr Galea paid the €30,000 in cash for the Camilleri murder case and funded the other €30,000 needed by using property as collateral.

He will remain under house arrest and has to sign the bail book at the police station twice a day.
