All eight BOV Premier League teams that did not feature in this summer’s UEFA club com-petitions will play in the AME Cup at the Sirens Stadium between July 20 and August 4.

Tarxien Rainbows, Mosta, Balzan, Floriana, Rabat Ajax, Qormi and newly-promoted sides Vittoriosa Stars and Naxxar Lions have all confirmed their participation in the pre-season tournament again organised by JPL Sports Events in conjunction with Luxol St Andrew’s FC.

Last season, Birkirkara lifted the AME Cup after beating Sliema Wanderers 2-1 in the final.

Louis Agius, for JPL Sports Events, said the two-week tour-nament represents an ideal oppor-tunity for the participating teams to step up their preparations ahead of the new season.

“With the 2013/14 season just a few weeks away, Premier League teams are currently stepping up efforts to finalise their plans ahead of their first competitive matches,” Agius said.

“The AME Cup comes at the right moment as it provides coaches an opportunity to closely monitor players on trial and other new signings. As we saw last year, some teams also opt for different tactics which they will apply along the season.”

Two groups

The eight teams in the tournament were split in two groups of four each with the top two progressing to the semi-finals.

The competition kicks off on July 20 with the opening matches from Group A. Naxxar play Balzan at 6.30pm and Mosta take on Tarxien at 8.30pm.

Group B gets underway on July 22 with the matches Floriana-Vittoriosa (6.30pm) and Rabat-Qormi (8.30pm).

The cup final will be played on August 4 at 8.30pm.
