Dazzle Troupe’s next instalment of their wild and vibrant burlesque shows will feature a new take on local history – through the eyes of aliens.

The performances, on March 23, 24 and 25, take on the history of Malta. Narrated as an extra terrestrial voyage through the unknown, aliens return to the Maltese islands where a recording device (planted on Malta thousands of years ago) has malfunctioned. Performers enact snapshots out of Maltese history, suitably deranged and given a hilarious twist.

Talking about the Burlesque experience, director Nicole Cuschieri says “the concept of the shows allows for artists to explore total freedom and produce their own creative work. Each performance brings together a broad variety of differ-ent art forms, developing intriguing performances for all types of people.”

Since 2009, Dazzle Troupe has produced six shows including the Time Travelling Burlesque Show, the Vaudeville Circus, the Strait Street Burlesque Show and the Monster Burlesque Cruise.

Each show builds a distinct world populated by the oddities and absurdities cooked up by a changing line-up of performers.

Hard-edged irony and light-hearted comedy, wrapped up in a unique burlesque style, have made the shows hard to beat in introducing locals, tourists and visitors alike to Maltese theatre’s dark underbelly – it’s not all Shakespeare and staging other people’s scripts.

It’s the theatrical equivalent of a crazy night out with a bunch of cross-dressing political satirists who enjoy a bit of belly dancing, and a lot of belly laughs.

The History of Malta Burlesque Show will be held over one weekend at Space 43, Lascaris Wharf, Valletta, from March 23 to 25 at 9 p.m. Tickets are €10.
