Price increases in fresh vegetables and meat products in the last three months of last year saw the agricultural index jump up by two per cent.

Figures released by the National Statistics Office show that the price of vegetables rose by five per cent, with onions seeing an astronomical increase of 124 per cent. Higher prices were registered for cows’ meat (16 per cent) and eggs (22 per cent). The hikes were mitigated by a substantial drop of 11 per cent in fruit prices.

The annual average producer price index for 2011 reflected a growth of two per cent over the previous year.
