Some 440 dogs and 160 cats are adopted every year, Environment Minister Leo Brincat said in Parliament.

A social media site has been launched so the public can see the animals being offered for adoption. Mr Brincat was answering three PQs by Opposition MP Michael Gonzi.

He said departmental officials regularly promoted animal adoption on radio and television programmes.

A number of activities were also organised, such as walks with dogs, to promote adoption.

Mr Brincat also said there were currently 32 cats and five kittens held in the quarantine section at the government experimental farm in Għammieri.

They are held in appropriate cages that are cleaned and sterilised with disinfectants that are approved according to the animals’ ailments.

Between January and February this year WasteServ received approximately 420 kilos of animals that had died at Għammieri or had been put to sleep at the St Francis Centre.
