Two drug addicts were yesterday charged over a nocturnal theft spree in which three cars were stolen and 13 were broken into.

Stephen Borg, 35, from Birkirkara and Antonella Vella, 29, from Fgura, were charged with 30 counts of theft and causing damage on Monday night.

Police investigations indicated that a Daihatsu Terios and Smart car were stolen from a garage in Fgura and taken to Qormi. A Peugeot 106 was then stolen from Tarxien and used in the other thefts.

The first two cars were used to store stolen items such as stereos, speakers and sunglasses, sources close to the case said. The thefts were probably carried out to sustain the suspects’ drug habits, the sources added.

Mr Borg and Ms Vella were allegedly found by the police in the stolen cars.

Mr Borg denied breaching bail in three different cases and Ms Vella denied committing a crime during the operative period of a suspended jail term, a conditional discharge and while on bail in connection with another case.

Magistrate Audrey Demicoli remanded them both in custody.
