A drug addict asked for money from a person manning a Żebbuġ pizzerija on Saturday afternoon and, when it was refused, he just grabbed €300 and ran off with it.

Shone Carmel Agius, 34, of Naxxar, admitted the incident to Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit in court yesterday but said he had no ill intent and had recognised that what he had done was wrong.

If that was the case, however, he was heading straight down the proverbial road to hell paved with good intentions: the man, who has a voluminous criminal record, was jailed for 23 months with a recommendation to attend a drug rehabilitation programme.

Lawyer Simon Micallef Stafrace appeared for the man.
