A drug addict who failed to take opportunities of serious reform has been jailed for 25 months after breaking into a hotel room and breaching probation conditions.

Silvio Camilleri, 29, from Gżira, stole a Nikon camera, an iPad, clothes and personal documents from the St George’s Park Hotel in St Julian’s on July 5.

He also tried to take items from the same hotel two days later but was caught by security.

He admitted theft and being in possession of tools which could be used in a theft without giving a reasonable explanation.

Magistrate Doreen Clarke said that after reviewing his criminal record it was evident he had failed to take a number of opportunities given to him by the courts to reform.

She said her hands were tied when it came to the handing down a jail term. She sentenced him to 14 months behind bars for the theft and a further 11 months for the crime he committed when he was on probation.

The magistrate also recommended that Mr Camilleri start a drug rehabilitation programme in prison.
