A man who lives in a room in a field opposite Mater Dei Hospital yesterday denied stealing several gold items including chalices from the hospital chapel.

Simon Chircop, 44, used to live in Gżira with his mother but she refused to let him stay due to his growing drug and alcohol problem.

He pleaded not guilty to the theft to the detriment of the Capuchin Friars and to relapsing.

Police Inspector Fabian Fleri told Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit that Mr Chircop, who is well-known to the police, was caught red-handed by hospital security officers on Thursday evening.

In objecting to a request for bail, Mr Fleri said the accused had told them he was better off in jail because he “could rest”.

Wearing yellow Bermuda shorts and a white t-shirt, Nike socks and black Nike trainers, Mr Chircop had to think twice when asked his age.

When asked whether his father was dead or alive he replied: “As far as I know, he’s dead”.

Police Inspector Jesmond Micallef also prosecuted. Lawyer Yana Micallef Stafrace appeared for the accused.
