The police will make their presence felt this month – but only to invite society they serve to join them in marking the 198th anniversary since the force was founded.

The Malta police formally came into being on July 12, 1814 by virtue of a proclamation issued by Governor Sir Thomas Maitland a few days earlier.

The activities start on Friday with an Open Day at the police depot in Floriana between 7 p.m. and 11 p.m. The headquarters will again be open for the public to visit on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

An Open Day will be held at the Victoria police station on July 17 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m.

The activities will include performances by the police band and displays by the precision drill team, the dogs’ section, the mounted police and the traffic unit.

Police Day proper will be celebrated on July 12 with solemn Mass at St John’s Co-Cathedral in Valletta.
