While reiterating that it was not the Opposition’s role to be part of the Executive, Deputy Leader of the Opposition Simon Busuttil said the Government could give roles to MPs from the other side of the House only by reviving the Opposition Nominees Act.

Nominations would be made in full transparency

This legislation, enacted in 1996 by the PN Government, gave the right to the Opposition to nominate people to sit on public boards. It was revoked by the Sant Government in 1997.

Dr Busuttil said the nominations would be made in full transparency; there would be no divide and rule.

The Opposition would not be bought with invitations to executive positions.

He criticised the appoint-ment of certain people to top posts in the civil service and public agencies, saying that it seemed the only criteria needed for such appoint-ments was participation in the Labour Party or being within the GWU.

Earlier he asked the Government to provide the exact reason why the 2012 Budget deficit figure has been revised from 2.3 to 3.3 per cent of GDP, saying the previous Government had based its projections on real figures.
