A port worker yesterday denied fracturing his partner’s jaw in a drunken domestic fight on Saturday evening and was granted bail.

Manolito Magri, 30, of Sta Venera also denied threatening to use further violence against her in the argument and relapsing. In pleas on bail, defence lawyer Jose’ Herrera told the court that “these port workers work hard, live hard and sometimes drink too much”.

He added that his client was not a career criminal.

Besides, the couple, who had been together for nine years but were currently living apart, had children together who needed to be looked after, Dr Herrera said.

Police Inspector Kevin Farrugia told the court that he was objecting to bail being granted because of the seriousness of the charges.

Magistrate Joseph Apap Bologna granted him bail against a personal guarantee of €1,000.
