The 58-year-old Russian woman charged with murdering her daughter last February was yesterday granted bail after spending just under a year in custody at Mount Carmel Hospital.
During the court case, shocking evidence emerged as forensic experts spoke of how marks on the mother and daughter pointed to an incestuous relationship between them.
Tamara Boubekova, 58, is pleading not guilty to the murder of Yulia Kalinina, 28, whose body was found lying on the floor of their Xemxija apartment on January 31 last year.
During yesterday’s sitting, defence lawyer Joe Giglio said his client had been in custody for around a year and that alone merited her being granted bail.
Furthermore, he pointed out that she had a resident’s permit and an apartment: just because she was a foreigner it did not mean that she should be denied bail.On the other hand, Police Inspector Chris Pullicino argued that the crime carried a maximum sentence of life imprisonment and that she might abscond. Magistrate Edwina Grima granted her bail against a personal guarantee of €20,000 and a deposit of €10,000.
