Spazju Kreattiv is tomorrow screening the Spanish Oscar-nominated film El Abuelo (The Grandfather).

When the Spanish aristocrat Don Rodrigo (Fernando Fernán Gómez), Count of Albrit, loses his fortune after a 20-year stay in the US, he returns to a family estate rife with rumours of scandal and infidelity.

In the wake of his son’s death by heartbreak, the ageing count decides to confront his son’s widow, Doña Lucrecia Richmond (Cayetana Guillén Cuervo) – a beautiful and well-connected English socialite with a reputation for affairs. As the estate’s inheritor, Lucrecia holds the reigns of power, including the secret of which of his doting grandaughters – Dolly or Nelly – is related to him by blood.

With the aid of a nervous elderly teacher named Pio Coronado (Rafael Alonso), Don Rodrigo finds himself caught up in a battle of wits against Lucrecia and her allies, delving deeper into a web of social intrigue and a mire of unsavoury details about the village he left behind.

El Abuelo, certified 14+, is being screened tomorrow at 7.30pm at St James Cavalier, Valletta. Free entrance but booking is required on www.kreattivita.org.
