French international defender Eric Abidal has confirmed that he hopes to reach agreement on an extension to his current contract with Barcelona, which is due to expire at the end of this season.

“I hope to reach agreement because it is my wish to stay here, with the best club in the world,” the 32-year-old told a press conference at Barcelona’s training ground.

“The fact that I have not yet signed a new deal is nothing to do with financial issues, but is rather related to the length of the contract.”

Abidal is hoping to agree a two-year extension to the deal which runs out next June, “even if that means a one-year deal with the option of another.”

The former Lyon player’s agent David Venditelli is due to meet with the club tomorrow to discuss new terms.
