The U-13 junior championships are an established feature in the seasonal calendar of Badminton Malta.

Played at the Cottonera Sports Complex, the competition kicked off with the U-13 section, which comprised the traditional five singles and doubles categories.

In the boys’ singles final, defending champion Matthew Abela faced Matthew Galea.

Abela retained his title after defeating his opponent in straight sets, 21/15 and 21/6.

The girls’ singles title was won by Sarah Fava who had the better of surprise finalist Katya Cachia, 21/9 and 21/12.

The boys’ doubles saw brothers Matthew and Mark Abela successfully defend the title they won in 2011.

Fava and Cheryl Gilford made the girls’ doubles title their own after prevailing 21/7, 21/8 over Michaela Ellul and Martina Vella.

The U-13 championships came to a close with the mixed doubles category. In the final, Matthew Abela/Martina Vella upstaged Matthew Galea/Michaela Ellul in two sets – 21/6, 21/6.

This third national junior title for Matthew Abela added the platonic ‘Triple Crown’ to his badminton curriculum.

In a statement, Badminton Malta expressed its satisfaction at the high standard of play shown by all the participants as well as at their sporting attitude.
