The Armed Forces of Malta were waging a “David and Goliath” battle against the migrant influx, Apostolic Administrator Charles Scicluna said.

“On seas flowing with peril, your work is a battle of small forces facing colossal difficulties. It is a continuation on the sea of the biblical battle between David and Goliath. It is a battle of solidarity for the dignity of our fellow men,” he said yesterday.

Mgr Scicluna was speaking during Mass at St John’s Co-Cathedral, Valletta, to mark the deposition of the army’s old colours.

The ceremony sees the AFM’s blue standards, which are no longer in use, being presented to the Church to be placed alongside other old banners at the co-cathedral.

Mgr Scicluna said that although the AFM was small compared to other national forces, its work was “far from futile”.

Thanking the officers for their hard work, he urged them to show the proper respect towards all those they come across in their line of duty.

“I thank you for your work safeguarding our country and democracy, which is the foundation of the Republic of Malta. I hope the missions you carry out will be aimed at safeguarding human dignity, whatever the religion, skin colour and race of the people involved,” he said.

Mgr Scicluna also told the troops he hoped that when they were required to use force, this would not end in violence.

Mgr Scicluna urged the soldiers not to put God aside, to seek recovery in confession and comfort in the Eucharist after carrying out their duty. Above all, he called on them never to be ashamed of seeking out the word of God.

“We need your courage, your sacrifice and your protection,” he told the congregation.

Home Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela called on the officers to set an example to younger troops and to carry out their duty with respect and honour.
