A group of 109 officers, non-commissioned officers, soldiers and retired personnel were yesterday rewarded with a medal for long and efficient service.

Speaking during a ceremony at the Luqa army barracks, Armed Forces Commander Jeffrey Curmi thanked the men for their exceptional service and sacrifices over the years.

The Long and Efficient Service Medal was first presented to 253 officers and other ranks in 1992 for those with more than 18 years of service and a clean conduct sheet.

When a soldier has completed 18, 25 or 30 years reckonable service, the commanding officer decides whether to initiate a recommendation.

Only soldiers who are worthy of the distinction and whose conduct has been irreproachable throughout are eventually recommended.

This year, 61 members of the service were decorated with a clasp, which is only awarded to those having served between 25 and 30 years while 48 members were decorated with the medal after having served 18 years.
