Alternattiva Demokratika condemned poor accessibility for deaf people and those hard of hearing because of the lack of subtitles on TV.

Spokeswoman on Disability Issues Claire Azzopardi Lane said that, despite PL’s electoral promise, access was still not yet available.

The rights of this minority group, as stated in Article nine of the United Nations Convention, ratified by Malta in 2012, which underlined the right to information and communication, were being infringed, she added.

“AD disagrees with Parliamentary Secretary Justyne Caruana who said that the sector has been ‘abandoned’ but insists that there is much more to be done that goes beyond conventional integration,” the party said in a statement.

“Saying that the sector has been ‘abandoned’ would be disrespectful towards those who, without underlying political motives, have worked to make positive changes in the disability sector,” Dr Azzopardi Lane said.
