More pedestrian zones should be created, especially in commercial areas and village and town centres, Alternattiva Demokratika chairman Michael Briguglio has said.
Speaking at a press conference in Bisazza Street, Sliema, which has been closed to traffic, Dr Briguglio said pedestrian zones should be created, especially in commercial areas and in village and town centres.
He said the accessibility of Malta’s roads for the disabled, the elderly and parents of young children needs to be improved.
Dr Briguglio called for maximum speed limits in residential areas to be reduced to 30km/h, with a view to keeping all pedestrians safer while giving back the use of such roads to the community.
The AD chairman said that Car-Free Day should serve as an eye-opener for the need for a sustainable transport policy.
“Green policy prioritises the use of public transport and cycling. Private vehicle use has increased at an alarming rate, leading to an increase in road congestion and pollution,” he said.
