Chicken in a Basket, the most famous pub meal from the 1970s, will be back on the British menu thanks to a national poll calling for its return.

Back by popular demand, pub restaurant operator Chef and Brewer has decided to turn the clock back nearly 40 years by returning 1970s favourites to its menu such as scampi and chicken in a basket and prawncocktail served in a wine glass.

A recent Opinion Matters poll, commissioned by Chef and Brewer, revealed that the decade is one that people remember with a great deal of affection. The move also follows a sharp increase in demand for ‘posh’ comfort food from childhood across all food retail sectors, which is widely believed to be a recession effect.

According to the research, lasagne, prawn cocktail, profiteroles, chilli con carne and chicken kiev were considered the best dishes of the 70s.

Baked Alaska, duck a l’orange, prawn cocktail and scampi in a basket were voted the dishes we’d most like to see make a comeback onto restaurant menus.

Chef and Brewer menu development chef, Kevin Steppe, said: “We have been overwhelmed by the popularity of our ‘Basket’ dishes and the nostalgia

we seem to have for them. Our research has shown that the 70s is certainly a decade we remember fondly and one that is clearly making a comeback this summer in the worlds of both fashion and food.”

There are 130 Chef and Brewer pub restaurants across the UK which are part of the Punch Pub Company which owns and operates over 800 managed pubs across the UK.
